Öskjuvatn / Askja (July 2015)

First impressions from a 14 days walk around the Dyngjufjöll (Askja) in July 2015.

After visiting the Holuhraun eruption in last September and a ski tour through the Ódáðahraun in March 2014 I was finally back in my favourite area. As you can see there was still a lot more winter than summer in the caldera. Instead of visiting some of the higher summits and places on the rim of the Askja caldera(s) we decided to walk around the Dyngjufjöll to avoid most of the wet and deep snow.

The pictures you see here were taken on a short trip to Öskjuvatn with the Myvatntours. They  took us to our starting point Dreki and also back to Mývatn two weeks later.

A lot more pictures of Nýja-Holuhraun, less well known areas and summits (e.g. Kollur,  Tviburatindur) will drop into my Ísland galleries in the next weeks. I hope you come back again to see them :-)

Update 2015-12-29: The new gallery with pictures from the 2015 tour around Askja are now online in the Ódáðahraun gallery -> ÓDÀÐAHRAUN

Lampyridae - Fireflies - Glühwürmchen

There are just three species of fireflies to be found in Germany, more than thousand exist worldwide. Here, only the males of "Lamprohiza splendidula" show their glowing bioluminescent green while they are flying. With this manner they try to contact the female fireflies which are sitting in the bushes or on the ground, also glowing.

In lush summer nights between June and July they can be found in some woods. Best time is after sunset in the twilight, the spectacle lasts normally until midnight when allmost all beetles have found their mates. It's an interesting experience to see these small, glowing green dots flying through the trees and bushes. Unfortunately, the mosquitos are also very active in these times...

Technique:

Some of the shown pictures are blended from more than one photo to "simulate" a longer exposure. But all pictures are real, without artificial lighting!

As there is always some rest of light, the surroundings would be to bright, i.e. unrealistic for a dark wood, with just one long exposure. Also it is a good idea to take on picture at base-ISO and a bit closed aperture as high quality base for the other exposures at higher ISO and open aperture. There is a lot trial and error as it is not easy to foresee the routes of the fireflies. It's best to search a suitable surrounding and to wait for the lights to appear. From hundreds of pictures just a few can be used…

More pictures will be uploaded to a dedicated gallery in the next days.

Please have a look at the Nightlight gallery, too.
