Part I: Mývatn - Suðurárbotnar - Dyngjufjalladalur

Öskjuvegur

Dyngjufjalladalur from Dyngjufjöll-Ytri

Öskjuvegur is the most popular hiking trail that leads through the heartland of the lava desert. Nevertheless it is still a relative quiet hike.

Öskjuvegur is maintained by Ferðafélag Akureyrar and leads from Herðubreiðarlindir to the huts at Bræðrafell, Drekagil, Dyngjufell and Suðurárbotnar. From Suðurárbotnar you can either walk to Svartárkot or in two days towards the Mývatn. That means you have to organize a transport from Suðurárbotnar or you have to carry a tent to spent the night anywere below the western foothills of Sellandafjall.

We started the trail at the southern end of Mývatn during a rainy morning. Here you find a few pictures of the first part from Grænavatn towards the pass Jónsskarð that leads into the mysterious world of the Askja caldera...
